The west side

Two communities on the far side of the mountains

The Tucson Mountains split the west side from the city, and the two communities on this page sit at either end of them. Tucson Estates lies to the south, off Kinney Road and Ajo Way, at about 2,650 feet. It is a census-designated place of 12,069 people (2020), made up of housing developments that include the Tucson Estates Property Owners Association area and Tucson Estates II, also called the Foothills.

Picture Rocks is to the northwest, at about 2,080 feet. It had 9,551 people in 2020, up from 8,139 in 2000, and its children go to Marana Unified schools. Both places are unincorporated Pima County, so the Pima County Sheriff, not Tucson police, takes a break-in or vandalism report here.

Between them is protected desert: Pima County's Tucson Mountain Park, set aside in April 1929 and now about 20,000 acres, and the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park, about 10 miles west of the city.

Getting there

The roads in and out

  1. Gates Pass

The short way over the top from Speedway Boulevard, crossing the crest at about 3,170 feet and dropping to Kinney Road near Old Tucson. Thomas Gates started the road in 1883. It has a steep grade partway through; 58 wrecks were reported between 1996 and 2001, and the road was widened in a 2005 safety project.

  2. Kinney Road

The main road through Tucson Mountain Park, named for county supervisor Jack C. Kinney. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum sits on it.

  3. Ajo Way (SR 86)

The flat way round the south end of the mountains, from I-19 exit 99 west past Tucson Estates. Further out it becomes the main highway across the Tohono O'odham Nation.

  4. Picture Rocks Road

The east-west commuter road through the national park's Tucson Mountain District to Picture Rocks. A 2002 proposal to close it to cars and turn it into a trail failed after public objection.

  5. Sandario Road

The north-south road on the Picture Rocks side, toward Marana.

The Gates Pass overlooks are a popular place to watch the sunset, so expect company on the road at dusk. If a stone hits the glass on any of these roads, note where and when, and take a dated photo.

ZIP codes

Three ZIP codes, and big ones

The 2020 Census puts Tucson Estates in 85735 and Picture Rocks in 85653 and 85743. Each of these codes stretches over a lot of open desert, and 85743 also reaches into Marana. A ZIP alone does not tell the technician much out here, so give us the full address and the nearest paved cross street when you book.

If the house is up a private lane or across a wash, say so. A map that shows a straight line to the door is often wrong about the last half mile.

Where we work

Installs on west-side lots

Many homes here sit on larger lots with gravel drives. That is fine for a windshield, with a few things in mind.

  • A level, firm spot near the house. Packed gravel or concrete is better than soft sand.
  • A carport, garage or the shade of the house in summer, and shelter from the wind any time of year. Blowing dust is the enemy of a clean install.
  • In the Tucson Estates developments, check any association rule about work in front of the house, and tell us if a gate or code applies.
  • Dogs, livestock and loose gates: let us know before the technician walks up.
  • If the wash on your road runs after a storm, pick a day when it is dry and tell us which way in is safest.

We do not install in rain or blowing dust. In monsoon season, storms usually build in the afternoon, so a morning slot gives the most room.

Why west-side glass wears

Dirt roads and desert wind

Two things wear windshields out here: stones flicked up on unpaved lanes and shoulders, and years of blown sand that leave the glass pitted and hazy in low sun. A pitted windshield is not something we repair, and neither is a chip, but when the haze or a crack gets in the way of seeing the road, a new windshield is the fix. We match the glass to your car by VIN, including any camera bracket, rain sensor or heated wiper area.

Picture Rocks and Tucson Estates questions

Not sure we reach your road? Call (520) 492-2800.

Do you come out past the Tucson Mountains?

Yes. Picture Rocks, Tucson Estates and the Tucson Mountains area are all on our Tucson listing, and we come to the home.

My road is unpaved. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Tell us about the road when you book, and have a firm, level place near the house where the car can sit.

Who do I report a break-in to out here?

Both communities are unincorporated Pima County, so the Pima County Sheriff's Department takes the report. It accepts some minor reports online.

Can my lane camera be calibrated at home?

In many cases, yes. Calibration comes with the windshield replacement when your car needs it, in the same visit where the procedure can be done on site. If your car needs a different setup, we tell you before booking.
